Frequently Asked Question
The best way to split out a bulk item to be sold individually is via the Summary Part # feature.
If you have items that are purchased in different quantity types than they are sold in, you can create summary (Bulk) and unit parts to correctly track the quantities.
For example, you may order a box of paper towels, which comes in 6 packs and then want to sell the rolls individually as well. The summary part number for the number under which you purchase the paper towels will be blank.
A second, new, part number would be created for the individual roll sales of the same physical product, priced by the roll and the summary part number would be the part number used to buy the pack of rolls. You will also need to modify the Reorder flag to an 'S', and set the Pur Qty to be the number of units that come in a bulk pack. In this example, there are 6, so the Pur Qty becomes '6'
This will allow you to split the pack and sell the rolls individually, using the new, single unit 'roll' item number. Once the 'roll' item has been depleted to zero or less, it will relieve one of the bulk items from inventory and replenish the single unit item number with the qty in the pack. In this case, it will reduce the qty of the Pack part # by 1 and add 6 units to the 'roll' item.
This also works well with Rolls of hose which are also broken open to sell by the foot, Barrels of oil which are decanted and sold by the litre, etc. Any scenario where you may purchase and sell a bulk product, but are also looking to sell that same item by the single unit.
